Info: I am 58 years of age, I am married and have two grown up children.
Originally from Northwich in Cheshire, I moved to Shropshire in 1977 when I joined West Mercia Constabulary.
During my 30 years’ service with the Police I was engaged in a number of roles including the C.I.D. Uniform and firearms departments. During the latter stages of my Police career I was trained as a Family Liaison Officer and had the privilege of looking after several families who had been traumatised through criminal and road traffic incidents.
Upon retiring from the Police in 2007 I took up employment with a local Funeral Director and have been involved in all aspects of that profession.
During this time I have been witness to hundreds of funeral services and realised that I could lead a funeral service as good if not better than most of the people I had witnessed.
I started to take up Civil Funeral Celebrancy in April 2014 and to date have carried out over 170 services throughout Shropshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands for a number of Funeral Directors and for many different families who have lost loved ones in numerous different circumstances.

Info: Being a celebrant is a privilege. Celebration of a life well lived is the finest of tributes. Recognition of the grief of those left is essential. Every farewell should be individual and personal for each and all. All funeral ceremonies I conduct are designed and written with a family/ friends wishes at its core. Each ceremony tailored for the individual. Having spent nearly 40 years as a professional nurse I have worked with many individuals and their families in times of celebration and sorrow. Being able to say a meaningful farewell is an important element in resolving the pain of loss.
I work closely with clients to get things right, incorporating their wishes, offering suggestions and choice where unsure. I believe it is important to help and support families participate in a ceremony as much, or little, as they are able or desire.

Info: I know how difficult it can be to arrange a funeral that feels right, whether it’s because you don’t know for certain what your loved one would have wanted, or because different people in the family have different ideas about what is appropriate. I will work with you to prepare an essentially non-religious ceremony that is solemn and reflective, and which celebrates what is important. You can incorporate poems, readings, memories, special music – and if you request it, familiar prayers and hymns, if this will bring comfort to those attending. The ceremony will truly reflect your own wishes, not what any organisation lays down.
Since 2010, I have been helping families to create a sincere and meaningful farewell. I can make suggestions for poems and readings that will help to express what your loved one meant to you – their loves and interests, your feelings of grief or gratitude for their life, or reflections on the nature of living and dying. There is nothing that legally has to be included, so the wording and content of the ceremony is entirely up to you. After visiting you in your own home, at a time that is convenient, I will prepare a first draft of the whole ceremony for you and your family to look at, and if necessary, amend. Afterwards, I provide a copy of the script in a commemorative wallet.
I am a member of the Dying Matters Coalition, which has the aim of raising awareness of death and bereavement, and promoting openness and communication about people’s wishes. The funeral service is an important part of carrying out what your loved one would have wanted.
But I am not there just for the sad times. You can have a beautiful ceremony for your happy event, whether it’s a baby naming, a significant birthday, a renewal of vows or even the celebration of a wedding. The ceremony can contain whatever elements you choose - perhaps you dream of a sunset wedding by a lake, or in the gardens of a country house, you’d like to mix secular and spiritual music, and you want to be able to choose a well-loved reading from Corinthians combined with your favourite non-religious poems. Maybe you look forward to appointing “guideparents” to make their own promises of support to your new baby, or wearing your beautiful wedding dress one more time at a renewal of vows ceremony in the company of family and friends who could not attend your marriage abroad

Trading as: Carol Palk Civil Celebrant

Training: NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Funeral Celebrancy (RQF) – Civil Ceremonies Ltd
Info: A few years ago, my friend’s daughter died; she was the same age as my eldest. Her funeral, had a huge impact on my life. It was the first celebrant led funeral that I had been to and I was stunned by the difference between this and funerals I had previously attended. I left the crematorium uplifted by the celebration of Katie’s life; warmed by the way the celebrant had captured the essence of her and shared it with those whose lives she had touched and who had gathered to remember and say goodbye. It changed the way I view death and, now I am semi-retired, I feel privileged to be in a position where I can do what that celebrant did - support bereaved families to share their memories, enabling me to capture and tell their loved one’s story in the way they wish, without the ties of ritual or tradition.
